ON CHESIL BEACH

Bleecker Street will release On Chesil Beach in theaters May 18, 2018

In an era of innocence, a sad love story but a love story nevertheless, set in England, is grey, gloomy and gut-wrenching. I’m not talking about the weather, I’m addressing the relationship. Set in the early 60s, just before the sexual revolution, innocent newlyweds Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle have a wedding night out of hell, hence their love will be challenged, in turn, it brings a long uphill battle against their upbringing. In the 50’s and 60’s you have to remember, kids were raised to never ask questions, be curious, speak when spoken to and most importantly placing your feelings aside.

Florence and Edward are in love, and they’re virgins in every aspect, shy with one another, almost cringe-worthy at times, both sexually inexperienced and neither know how to deal with conflict. Imagine if you will, two people whom never been with another was never “given the talk,” or allowed to ask or express themselves due to being inappropriate, and now they’re trying to consummate their marriage. The embarrassment that these two feel truly tugs at your heart, and the scariest part, downstairs is a hotel full of guests!

A little background on the timid couple, both are college graduates, Edwards family is from the country, down to earth that’s been tainted and scarred by a terrible accident. Florence comes from a wealthy family, the exact opposite of Edwards upbringing. Florence is an extremely talented violinist. She has dreamed of playing on stage at Wigmore Hall. I'll leave you with this and most importantly, this is a love story that everyone should see.
