Thank you, Disney, for inviting me to meet Mark Henn, Ron Clements and (live web interview) Jodi Benson! My dream has come true, as a little girl I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid, she’s independent, strong-willed and loved that she did what she wanted and wasn’t scared. Now, as a mom, my little one is literally in love with Ariel. I let Jodi know that my son is in love with Ariel. We walked into the Disney Shop almost a year ago and I had let him know, you can pick one toy and I’ll buy it. He came up to me 5 minutes later with Ariel in hand and said, “Mama I want Ariel.” I was curious, why her out of everything in the store, he looked me in the eye and said, “she’s beautiful, look at her bright red hair, she so pretty.”

We had the most enlightening conversation with Ron Clements and Mark Henn. Fun fact: Ron Clements and co-director John Musker pitched the idea to Walt Disney Animation Studios to create a more optimistic version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale “The Little Mermaid”. Did you know The Little Mermaid SAVED Disney Animation! Yes, you read that right. The Little Mermaid funded the creation of Disney very animation, the building we were sitting in, all the jobs created, lives changed, absolutely remarkable.

We asked Jodi what her favorite moment was from Little Mermaid after all these years and it was so heartwarming. It was where Ariel gives King Triton a hug and whispers “I love you, daddy.” Cue me crying! Here’s another fun fact, in 89’ actors that did voice-overs generally meant that their careers are tanking, so when she had the opportunity to do this, she thought she could do it and not let anyone know. Surprise, Jodi got a call from her agent, asking if she was ready to tour 20 cities in 22 days for the opening of The Little Mermaid. She was horrified that, 20 cities in 22 days! This is when she realized that this movie was much more than just a “voice-over,” it’s the start of something spectacular. At the premiere, Glen Keane (who designed and animated Ariel), told her, “Don’t ever forget Jodi, don’t ever forget your voice brought Ariel life.”
