“HERE WE ARE” UPCYCLING ACTIVITY for EARTH DAY!
In celebration of EARTH DAY, APPLE TV has created a new show! Take a tour of the planet we call home. Adapted from the best-selling children’s book by Oliver Jeffers and narrated by Meryl Streep, Living on Planet Earth now on Apple TV+.
Here’s what you can do at home, UPCYCLING!
What’s that you ask? Tap into your children’s imagination by upcycling or creatively repurposing unwanted household items (e.g., making doll houses out of plastic bottles or walkie talkies out of food cans) etc. Well, P and I are taking seeds from our orange (that we just ate) and planting it in a small planter.
We love citrus, Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C, a nutrient that strengthens the immune system and keeps your skin smooth and elastic. In fact, just one medium orange has all the vitamin C you need in a day. Citrus fruits are a good source of fiber. Just one cup of orange segments contains four grams of fiber.
We took a Clay Pot that you can find at Michael's Art and Crafts store, pick up acrylic paint, Miracle Grow Potting soil (TARGET) and seeds. Start your creation and have fun!
Clay pots help with air movements, stimulates root growth, which results in healthier plants. But the clay also wicks moisture out of the soil, making ceramic pots a better choice if you tend to over water or for plants that prefer dry soils. This also means plants in ceramic pots require more water than plants in plastic pots.
How to prepare planting:
Scrub the interior and exterior of previously-used pots to remove dirt and debris. If you’re using a new pot just wipe it down.
Position your pot or pots in the general area where you plan to set them. Pots are harder to move once they are filled with soil and plants.
Fill the container with potting soil up to within 1/2 inch of the rim.
Soak the potting soil to prepare for planting. The soil should be moist to a depth of at least 1 inch after this pre-plant soaking.
Check under the clay pot container to ensure that some water is draining away but that too much soil isn't escaping the bottom of the pot as well.
Now if you don’t have seeds, I’m sure you have chamomile tea at home. Open up the tea bag and there are seeds in that! Bet you didn’t know. Chamomile tea bags in reality have the source of thousands of seeds. These can remain perfectly viable for years past their sell-by date and provide a stream of pretty native flowers all summer long.
Tear open your chamomile tea bag and evenly sow the seeds over your soil. Chamomile seeds want light to germinate so you don't have to bury them. Gently drip water over all of the chamomile to moisten them and viola you’ve planted something absolutely beautiful to come!
I had kiddo paint our pot and since he’s a HUGE Captain America fan, hence the star and circle, it’s suppose to be his shield. ;)
