Thank you Nickelodeon for inviting me to the Casagrandes virtual press junket with Sonia Manzano the grandmother, “Rosa” – and she also played “Maria” with Sumalee Montano (the mom, “Maria”.)

If you don’t know Sumalee and Sonia, here are some amazing facts that you need to know about these two power house woman, whom are the voices of our beloved character.

Sumalee Montano

Sumalee was born and raised in America's Heartland, in Columbus, Ohio. Her mother is from the Philippines and her father from Thailand. Sumalee's ethnic heritage is Filipino, Thai, Chinese, and German.

Before pursuing her career in the arts, Sumalee worked as an investment banking analyst for Morgan Stanley in both New York and Hong Kong. She received her B.A. from Harvard and is also a U.S. Fulbright Scholar.

As a budding producer, Sumalee recently wrapped filming on her first feature film. As an actor, Sumalee has recurred on TV shows like This Is Us, VEEP, Scandal, NCIS, Nashville, and ER. Her voice-over credits include nearly 100 AAA video games and animated series, including the Emmy Award-winning Transformers Prime, where she plays Arcee, the show's female lead.

Sumalee's granduncle, Severino Montano, is also a revered National Artist of the Philippines.

Sonia Manzano

Sonia Manzano is a first-generation American of Latino descent who has affected the lives of millions of parents and children since the early 1970s, when she was offered an opportunity to play “Maria” on Sesame Street.

Manzano was raised in the South Bronx where her involvement in the arts was inspired by teachers who encouraged her to audition for the High School of Performing Arts. She was accepted there and began her career as an actress. A scholarship took her to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and in her junior year, she came to New York to star in the original production of the off-Broadway show Godspell. Within a year, Manzano joined the production of Sesame Street, where she eventually began writing scripts for the series. She was thrilled to help write the story line for “Maria’s” marriage and birth of “Maria’s” baby, played for a while by Manzano’s real-life daughter Gabriela.
